Roman art, c. 1st century A.D.
The intaglio shows a satyr nude, standing, the body in three-quarter view and the head in profile, caught in movement. In one hand he holds the pedum — the pastoral crook of the companions of Dionysus — and in the other an animal (a rabbit?), familiar game of the Bacchic train.
The stone
Green chalcedony, translucent and deep in hue, was favoured by Roman engravers of the 1st century. Here the choice of stone and its colour echo the subject: the green answers the wild nature and vegetation of the Dionysiac world the satyr inhabits.
Iconography
The satyr, half-man half-beast of the train of Dionysus, embodies the vitality of wild nature and the intoxication of the thiasos. The pedum and the game held in hand evoke the hunt and pastoral life, constant themes of Bacchic imagery. A much-favoured subject of Roman glyptic, it made the ring a talisman of vitality and abundance.

Section 9. Import and Export Regulations Regarding Tangible Property
The United Kingdom and most foreign countries regulate the importation and exportation of tangible property. Many countries require a declaration of export for property that is leaving the country. Section 10. General
If any part of the Terms of Use is held unlawful or unenforceable that part shall be struck out and the remaining terms shall remain in effect. We hereby exclude to the fullest extent permitted by law, any rights of third parties.

Notices are deemed delivered on delivery if by hand or the third day after posting, or if delivered by email, immediately upon transmission if transmitted during normal business hours in the country of the recipient, or otherwise on the following business day.
3. The Terms of Use and any non-contractual obligations arising from or in connection with it or its subject matter or formation (including non-contractual disputes or claims), shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with the law of England and Wales and shall be subject to the non-exclusive courts of England and Wales.
