A Victorian gold signet ring set with an agate intaglio. Horse promote with attributes and letters.

£ 2550

Intaglio 12x13 mm
US size 6 - UK M - FR 52 ½
Total weight 4,41 gr
Circa 1830-40

A Victorian gold ring, the cushion-shaped agate intaglio depicting a horse protome facing left, mouth open and bridled, surrounded by a series of attributes: a club, an ear of corn, a palm (or feather), and a star. The composition is completed by the Latin letters I ★ AV L C arranged around the field.

The stone is mounted in a gold bezel, supported by voluted shoulders of Neo-Baroque inspiration, the shank chased with a stylised acanthus leaf.

The iconography — the horse protome combined with a group of symbolic attributes and a short abbreviated inscription — belongs to a typology well attested in Roman glyptic from the Imperial period, where the horse's head is associated with victory, military prestige and equestrian status, while the accompanying objects may refer to the personal or professional identity of the seal-owner.

The letters are likely to form an abbreviated personal name or motto (or fantaisist), in keeping with the function of the intaglio as a signet.
