Roman imperial, 2nd century A.D. on an Art Deco ring, ca. 1920.

A Roman imperial bloodstone intaglio set in an Art Deco 18-karat yellow gold ring. The dark green stone, finely engraved, depicts Venus Anadyomene standing in a graceful contrapposto, her torso bare, raising both hands to arrange her hair — the defining gesture of the goddess rising from the sea. Her lower body is enveloped in a delicate folded drapery. To her left, a small winged Cupid proffers an attribute, most plausibly a mirror, lending the composition the character of an intimate toilette scene charged with allegorical resonance: an eternal allegory of beauty, love, and divine youth.

The subject finds close parallels among ancient gnostic gems, where the Venus Anadyomene type frequently appears alongside magical inscriptions on the reverse, investing the image with apotropaic or amuletic significance.

The Art Deco mount is formed by a rounded, flat-set hoop with elegantly cut shoulders supporting a bold oval bezel with geometric detailing. Beneath the bezel, the interior of the ring is engraved with three capital letters — AMI — possibly an abbreviation of a personal motto or a hidden dedication by a former owner, imbuing this already exceptional piece with an additional layer of intimate history.
