A Victorian gold ring set with a Roman banded agate intaglio. Mercury.

£ 2450

Stone 7 x 11 mm
Mount : silver bezel with gold hoop
Ring size: US size 7 - UK N - FR 55 (resizeable)
Total weight 1,93 gr

Intaglio : Roman art, 2nd century A.D
Mounting: Victorian era, 19th century

Carved in a warm honey-toned banded agate of exceptional translucency, this intaglio depicts Mercury — the divine messenger and god of travellers, commerce, and eloquence — standing in full figure. He is shown wearing
mantle and caduceus in his right hand, in his left hand a purse. His body rendered with the confident, fluid line that characterises the finest Roman glyptic art of the Imperial period.
The intaglio is set in a later gold and silver ring of the Victorian era, with elegantly scrolled shoulders and a plain hoop.
