a belle époque diamond & pearl scroll brooch | french c.1900

A Belle Époque Diamond & Pearl Scroll Brooch | French c.1900

£ 1500

Length: 50 mm
Total weight: 8.9 grams
Materials: Rose-cut diamonds, natural pearl, silver-on-gold mounting
Period: French work, circa 1900
Provenance: Original fitted case from Maison L. Prévost, 79 rue du Bac, Paris

An exquisite example of French Belle Époque jewelry, this elegant brooch embodies the fluid, naturalistic aesthetic that defined the turn of the century.

The design centers on a luminous natural pearl embraced by a heart-shaped motif, from which unfurls a graceful composition of scrolling volutes. The entire piece is adorned with rose-cut diamonds set in silver-on-gold—a hallmark technique of the period that maximizes the brilliance of the stones while maintaining structural integrity. The scrollwork demonstrates the masterful balance between symmetry and movement characteristic of Art Nouveau influence.

This brooch is housed in its original fitted case bearing the monogram "G.N." beneath a marquess crown, from the distinguished Maison L. Prévost, jeweler and goldsmith at 79 rue du Bac, Paris. The Prévost atelier was renowned for exceptional craftsmanship and served an elite clientele in one of Paris's most prestigious neighborhoods.

The piece represents French joaillerie at its finest, combining technical virtuosity with artistic elegance. The silver-on-gold mounting technique allows the diamonds to appear suspended in light, while the natural pearl glows with orient luster at the composition's heart.

Condition: Excellent, later pin fitting on reverse
