An Etruscan Revival gold brooch set with Roman green chalcedony intaglios.

£ 3500

Total length: 5,4 cm
Intaglios: app. 7x9 mm
Italian workshop,19th century

The brooch is composed of two rectangular gold plaques soldered together. The front plaque is crafted from twisted and braided gold wires. On either side, scrolling motifs adorned with pearls and a floral element provide elegant accents. At the center, four richly braided medallions each set with a Roman intaglio on green chalcedony—depicting (from left to right): Frontal helmeted bust of a warrior, Spes (figure of Hope), bust of Minerva, Dextrarum Junctio, alternate with delicate vegetal motifs.
The various techniques employed in the creation of this brooch draw direct inspiration from Etruscan goldsmithing of the 6th–4th centuries B.C., and echo the masterpieces of Giuliano and Castellani, the renowned Italian jewellers celebrated for their mastery of the Antique Revival style.
