A 19th century gold ring set with an early Roman garnet intaglio. Victory.

£ 1950

gold and Garnet (little chip on top)
Stone: 1.3 x 1 cm (0 ¹/₂ x 0 ³/₈ inches)
UK Size L1/2 - Total weight 5,25 gr

An impressive gold ring featuring a finely engraved cabochon garnet intaglio of the Roman Imperial period, set within a 19th century mount.

The deep crimson stone is carved with the figure of Victoria (Nike), the winged goddess of Victory, depicted in flowing drapery and captured in graceful movement. She holds a palm frond — symbol of triumph — and extends a laurel wreath, the timeless emblem of glory bestowed upon victors and emperors alike. The masterful intaglio work displays confident, fluid lines characteristic of Roman Imperial gem engraving at its finest.

The later gold mount, with its elegant split shoulders and scalloped bezel, exemplifies the 19th century taste for setting ancient gems in contemporary jewellery — a practice favoured by Grand Tour collectors and connoisseurs of classical antiquity.

A jewel uniting two eras: the artistry of ancient Rome and the refined sensibility of the Victorian age.
