A modern gold ring set with a Roman red jasper intaglio. Dog.

£ 2200

Intaglio: 0.7 x 0.5 cm (0 ¹/₄ x 0 ¹/₄ inches)
Mounting: UK size R 1/2 ; total weight 3,38 gr
Roman imperial, 1st-2nd century A.D.

This refined gold ring showcases an authentic Roman intaglio carved in rich red jasper, depicting a dog facing right. The animal raises its head skyward, gazing toward the sun or perhaps a full moon, standing upon a groundline.

In ancient Rome, the dog was a powerful symbol of fidelity, vigilance, and protection of the home. Intaglios bearing this motif were highly valued as personal talismans and seals.

The contemporary gold mount, with its openwork design inspired by classical aesthetics, beautifully highlights this two-thousand-year-old gem while giving it new life as an exceptional piece of wearable art.
European collection, acquired on the market, early 2000's
