Late 18th century
A substantial and exceptionally refined 18th-century gold swivel seal pendant, combining two objects of distinct antiquarian fascination in a single jewel of remarkable ingenuity.
The mount, worked in 18-carat gold, is articulated around a central pivoting axis allowing the scarab to rotate and present either face — the carved dorsal surface of the scarab above, or the engraved intaglio below. The gold frame is ornamented with chased foliate scrolls, rosette terminals, and a row of applied gold beads, terminating in a looped suspension ring — the whole displaying the confident and decorative vocabulary of late 18th-century goldsmithing.
The stone is a large red jasper scarab, carved in the Etruscan manner. The flat underside is engraved as an intaglio, depicting Jupiter standing in three-quarter view, turned toward the left, partially draped and holding his thunderbolts. The god rests upon an olive branch — a rare and thoughtful iconographic detail combining his martial power with the promise of peace. Below, a globe with two engraved horizontal lines completes the composition. The whole is framed by a finely hatched border.
The combination of scarab and classical deity reflects the taste of the Enlightenment for syncretist antiquarian imagery, so characteristic of the Grand Tour collecting tradition.

If you do not provide this information we will not be able to perform our contract or enter into our contract with you and you may also be in breach of contract. Section 9. Import and Export Regulations Regarding Tangible Property
The United Kingdom and most foreign countries regulate the importation and exportation of tangible property. Many countries require a declaration of export for property that is leaving the country. Section 10. General
If any part of the Terms of Use is held unlawful or unenforceable that part shall be struck out and the remaining terms shall remain in effect. We hereby exclude to the fullest extent permitted by law, any rights of third parties.

Notices are deemed delivered on delivery if by hand or the third day after posting, or if delivered by email, immediately upon transmission if transmitted during normal business hours in the country of the recipient, or otherwise on the following business day.
3. The Terms of Use and any non-contractual obligations arising from or in connection with it or its subject matter or formation (including non-contractual disputes or claims), shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with the law of England and Wales and shall be subject to the non-exclusive courts of England and Wales.
